Unfortunately, the horrors of war do not end with the signing of a treaty or armistice. Years later, legacy weapons and munitions still wreak havoc in the lives of innocent civilians across the world.

In Cambodia, which experienced a bloody civil war from 1968 – 1975, it is estimated that there are currently some 40,000 amputees — victims of landmines and discarded weapons. Furthermore, experts believe that as many as four to six million landmines remain undetected throughout rural Cambodia.

However, despite these horrific statistics, there is now a much greater sense of hope and optimism than ever before.

Showing incredible amounts of resourcefulness and resiliency, artisan craftspeople in rural Cambodia are now turning discarded weapons from previous wars into beautiful pieces of artisan jewelry.

Showcasing an ever-popular tassel design, this remarkable necklace & pendant is a wonderful example of how Cambodian jewelers are able to transform horror into beauty.

Featuring fragments from a decommissioned bullet, this stunning necklace will stop people in their tracks. As you explain the significance of this design to all who enquire, it is your absolute right and privilege to take immense pride in knowing that you have contributed to the fair trade movement and helped to make the world a slightly safer place.

About The Artisan

Cambodia Fair Trade Jeweler

Despite years of economic growth, many Cambodians, approximately 30% of the population, are still living well below the poverty line on a meagre $1.25 or less per day. Thankfully, the fair trade movement, supported by more-and-more conscientious consumers around the world, is helping to redress this injustice.

Located approximately 30 minutes from the capital Phnom Penh, artisan jewelers in Cambodia are now transforming discarded bullets and bomb casings from previous conflicts into beautiful pieces of jewelry. In doing so, they are able to create a sustainable livelihood for their families and contribute to the economic development of their communities.

Along with the economic opportunities that this enterprise presents to artisan jewelers, their work is also vital in helping to reduce the risk of accidental injury or death caused by abandoned weapons, especially landmines. Furthermore, transforming discarded weapons into beautiful pieces of jewelry is a very effective way of preventing such weapons from getting into “the wrong hands”.

By supporting this fair trade project, you are not only contributing to the economic prosperity of vulnerable people in Cambodia, but also enabling them to live in a safer environment with a much greater sense of dignity and pride.

While some jewelry is worth one million dollars, this jewelry is worth a whole lot more.
